Previously prepared news reports, sports highlights, and other features are stored on videotape. These taped features and reports are played for the viewer at the appropriate time in programs as required.

TV stations usually have several videotape machines (VTR’s) to play these videos, each with its own monitor. The VTRs are controlled electronically and played when required by the director. The VTR operator smoothly inserts them into the program with no abrupt transitions.

VTR operators also are required to have skills in editing. Video footage from shooting needs to be “cut” and assembled in the required order using an “editing suite”. The VTR operator uses various techniques in editing to ensure that the finished product will be interesting and hold the viewer’s attention.

(More about video editing on page 21).
